victim of trafficking

Human trafficking is a serious crime committed against the most vulnerable in society. These criminals gain the trust of the individual only to physically, mentally, and sexually exploit them. As a community, it is up to everyone to spot the signs of trafficking to prevent further harm and assist victims.

So, how can you identify a victim of human trafficking? Here are a few signs to look for in Ohio.

Unusual Behavior

When someone has been trafficked, they will usually display a few unusual behaviors. If you are observant, you might notice these signs in potential victims. Often, these individuals will have their movements and freedom restricted. Traffickers usually control victims’ movements to prevent escape.

Watch out for someone who seems to be speaking for the victim, as well as a person who handles their money or identification.  If you do happen to talk to a possibly trafficked individual, keep in mind that traffickers often train their victims to provide rehearsed responses when asked certain questions.

If you approach these individuals, they may appear anxious or fearful. A trafficked person will be hesitant to disclose personal information. Trafficked individuals often experience intense emotional distress, which may turn into fear, anxiety, depression, or hyper-vigilance when around other people. If you notice someone displaying these emotions, it is a possibility that they may be a victim of trafficking. You might want to look for other signs that they may be a victim of this crime.

Physical Violence and Emotional Changes

Since their captors do use physical violence against these individuals, they may also exhibit signs of physical abuse or restraint, such as having visible injuries on the arms, hands, or legs. Bruises, cuts, or burn marks are common on trafficked victims.

In the beginning stages of the trafficking, a person may become groomed to join their captor. Sometimes, this can result in frequent disappearances or sudden changes in routine. These behaviors are very common in cases where teenagers have been trafficked. If you notice these signs in your loved one or another person, you need to take action immediately to prevent them from leaving with a trafficker. Traffickers may promise young victims with false promises of a lavish lifestyle, trying to get them to leave their families and home.

Additionally, some victims may exhibit sexualized behavior that is inappropriate for their age. Often, this happens as the result of exploitation. You may also want to look out for signs of extreme fatigue due to long hours and harsh conditions. Many times, that leaves the individual withdrawn or disoriented.

Poor Living Conditions

Human trafficking can happen anywhere, even in the most prestigious neighborhoods. You will want to take notice of any unusual activities, such as multiple people living in overcrowded or unsafe houses in your area.

Traffickers may keep victims in places with barred windows equipped with steel bars and reinforced locks. Additionally, interior and exterior cameras are often installed to monitor the movements of individuals within the premises. All these barriers and restrictions prevent them from seeking help or escaping their situation.
